Man, trying to outrun (out pedal?) a heavy duty thunderstorm mixed with a bunch of crazy lightening can be quite exhausting! Brie and I headed out on the Blue from the south side of Hamburg Road at around 4:30 PM tonight determined to get a ride in after picking up our bikes from repairs.
Well, it all started out fine for the first couple of miles, then it got darker and darker and the wind picked up fairly strong as we headed down the Lawnmower Trail. By the time we reached the fire road at the bottom and began to climb up the left side the wind really picked up and it started to sprinkle a good bit harder.
By the time we reached the top where we usually cut off and go right down towards the Volkswagen Trail it was getting much worse so we decided to stay straight and shorten the ride by going about a quarter mile further then cut right up the little hill and back towards the Blue and Hamburg Road.
No sooner than we got to the car and all hell broke loose for about 10 minutes or so . . . everyone had already left the parking area that was there when we first arrived. So, nothing to do but have a nice post-ride beverage, right? Well, in no time flat, it seemed, the storm headed on down the mountain towards the city and so did we. Some tasty Greek Pizza from Athens Restaurant at home and a few beers (two Holy Sheets & a Smoked Arrogant Bastard Ale) later and the sun was back out and shining!
Things could have been much worse, of course. One of our posse members, Ken Knee D. fell earlier in the afternoon on a log pile going up the Lawnmower Trail (he has cleaned it a hundred times before) and broke five ribs (ouch, brother; get better soon)!
Hopefully, we can get a ride in tomorrow without a downpour! Isolated thunderstorms are once again possible according to The Weather Channel.
